Compared to last week, steer calves weighing under 600 lbs sold steady to firm, with a light test of 600-650 lb steers selling mostly 3.00-6.00 lower than last week's active market, over 700 lbs were not well tested but sold with a firm undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-550 lbs when compared to last week's very active market sold mostly 4.00-8.00 lower with over 600 lbs not well tested with a consignment of 160 head of fancy black heifers weighing 675 lbs selling with very good demand on and active market. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady. September corn closed 15 cents higher with December corn closing 18 3/4 cents higher as corn buying surfaced with last week's Pro-Farmer Tour coming in with lower estimates with a 168.1 bu/per acre average. This had Feeder cattle contracts under pressure with the front three months closing 227 to 232 lower.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
