Compared to last week's light volume sale, the best test was on 450-650 lb steers selling firm to 5.00 higher, with weights over 650 lbs trading with a higher undertone. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs were lightly tested and sold with a higher undertone with three pot loads of 7 weight heifers selling with a sharply higher undertone. Slaughter cows sold firm to 4.00 higher. A nice quality offering of 400-650 steers and a pot load of 870 lb steers all sold with good demand on and active market along with the 7 weight heifers. September corn closed 9 1/4 cents lower with December corn closing 10 1/4 cents lower with Feeder Cattle contracts for September, October and November 155.00-175.00 higher to start the week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
