Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold firm to 5.00 higher, 500-700 lbs sold mostly 5.00-10.00 higher with most advance on the 500-550 lb and 600-650 lb steers, with yearlings over 700 lbs selling with a sharply higher undertone on limited comparisons. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold 3.00-7.00 higher, 500-600 lbs sold 2.00-5.00 higher and over 600 lbs sold with a higher undertone. Slaughter cows mostly boning and lean cows traded 3.00-5.00 lower. Very active market this week with 16 pot loads, many strings and groups of top quality calves and yearlings in the offering with buyers very aggressive to purchase feeders. CME Feeder Cattle contracts on the front three months closed with triple digit gains of 2.12 to 3.15 higher as demand for feeders remains aggressive as long term optimism is bullish.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
