Compared to last week's heavy volume sale and very active market, steer calves weighing 400-450 lbs sold 2.00-4.00 lower, with 450-650 lb steers selling mostly 5.00-10.00 lower, a light test of 650-800 lb steers sold with a lower undertone and a pot load of 890 lb steers of similar weights as last week's pot loads sold near 10.00 lower. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold 4.00-8.00 lower, with 500-600 lbs selling mostly 12.00-15.00 lower and over 600 lbs on a light test traded with a lower undertone. Slaughter cows sold 3.00-5.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate supply with best demand on the 400-600 lb steers. Monday's markets saw wide spread selling in the commodity markets as CME Live Cattle futures traded 2.05 to 232 lower on the front three months with Feeder Cattle contracts trading 2.22 to 3.15 lower on the front three months. The Dow lost 879 points with the Fed looking to raise interest rates this week had commodities feeling the effects of economic woes along with this week's heat wave.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
