Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last week's very active market, 400-500 lb steer calves sold 3.00-6.00 lower, 500-600 lbs steers traded firm to 3.00 higher, 600-650 lbs sold 2.00-4.00 lower and over 650 lbs traded with a firm to higher undertone on mostly six pot loads of 830-915 lb steers. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold mostly steady, 5 weight heifers on comparable sales with last week sold 3.00-5.00 higher, over 600 lbs were not well tested. Demand was moderate to good on a heavy supply of top quality calves and yearlings with 11 pot loads in the offering. Monday's auction included a large offering of steer calves weighing 400-700 lbs with several strings and large groups in the offering, the 4 weight steers and 600-650 lb steer calves failed to reach last week's top prices but still sold on a very active market along with the pot loads of yearlings. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 higher.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
