Compared to last week, lot of new crop calves on Monday's auction in the offering that were unweaned/short weaned (30 days or less) many carrying flesh weighing mostly 400-600 lbs for the most part steer and heifer calves weighing 450-600 lbs sold steady to 5.00 lower with the exception of 550-600 lb steers trading mostly steady to firm. Steers weighing 600-800 lbs were lightly tested with last week and a pot load of 895 lb steers sold near 5.00 lower than last weeks pot load of similar weights, with heifers over 600 lbs not well tested. Slaughter cows on a large offering sold firm to 2.00 higher. May corn closed 15 1/2 cents higher and December corn closed 11 cents higher putting the pressure on Feeder Cattle contracts closing with triple-digit losses with the front two months down 3.20-3.65 with the back months down 1.50-2.25.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
