Compared to last week, a lighter offering but market rebounded with 400-500 lbs steer calves on a light test trading mostly steady, 500-700 lb steers sold mostly 3.00-7.00 higher, with 750-850 lbs firm to 3.00 higher, and over 850 lbs selling with a higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-600 lbs got back all they lost week trading mostly 10.00-20.00 higher, spots 25.00 higher, and 600-700 lb heifers sold with a higher undertone on few good comparisons. Feeder market had a much better feel to it this Monday as buyers returned and aided by CME cattle futures trading sharply higher as Feeder Cattle gained from 2.67-4.42 on the front three months and May corn closed 14 1/4 cents lower and December corn down 2 3/4 cents. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm, spots 3.00-higher on the high dressing cows.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
