Compared to last week, much lighter offering and test this week, with 400-500 lb steer calves selling steady to 5.00 lower, 500-600 lb steers sold 4.00-8.00 lower with the most decline on the 500-550 lbs, 600-650 lbs sold steady on a light test with 650-800 lbs lightly tested, 4 pot loads of 895-945 lb steers had no recent test. Feeder heifers weighing 450-550 lbs sold fully steady to firm on a very active market, with 550-600 lbs trading mostly 3.00-5.00 lower and 600-650 lbs heifers sold mostly 5.00-8.00 lower on comparable sales with weighing conditions not as attractive as last week. Demand was moderate to good with supply light to moderate. The steer calves weighing 400-600 lbs traded somewhat lower but market remains very good on these grass calves as it was getting a little top heavy. Overall despite some head winds in the commodity markets with the front three months of corn closing 33-38 cents higher and soybeans 43-54 cents higher on Monday feeder cattle weighing 400-600 lbs continue to sell on a very active market. Markets continue to remain volatile as Ukraine struggles with Russia has much uncertainty in the market place. Slaughter cows sold steady.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
