Compared to last week, much lighter receipts this week due to the snowstorm over the weekend dropping 3-5 inches in the area, 400-500 lb steers sold mostly steady, with 500-600 lb selling unevenly steady to spots 4.00 lower, 600-700 lbs sold steady to firm with spots 2.00 higher, 700-750 lbs sold steady to mostly 5.00 lower with yearlings over 750 lbs not well tested. Feeder heifers weighing 450-550 lbs sold steady to firm, with 550-600 lb and 650-700 lbs selling mostly 5.00-6.00 lower. Slaughter cows sold firm to 3.00 higher. Offering included six pot loads of 800-930 lb yearling steers selling with moderate to good demand. CME cattle futures were closed due to the MLK holiday.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
