Compared to last week, steer calves under 500 lbs were very lightly tested, 500-550 lbs sold steady, with 550-650 lbs selling steady to 3.00 lower and 700-750 lbs on a light test sold steady to 5.00 lower, over 750 lbs were not well tested with last week's offering. Feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower with 500-700 lbs selling steady and 700-750 lbs sold with a firm undertone. Slaughter cows traded mostly steady to spots 2.00 lower on the averaging dressing cows. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate offering. A nice quality offering of steers weighing 500-800 lbs with several pot loads and part loads selling with good weighing conditions.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
