Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-550 lbs sold 6.00-10.00 higher, spots 12.00 higher with 550-600 lbs selling steady to firm on alight test, over 600 lbs sold with a higher undertone on limited comparisons with last week. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold with a higher undertone on a light test, with 500-550 lbs trading 4.00-6.00 higher, 550-600 lbs sold steady to 2.00 higher, 600-700 lbs sold with a higher undertone on a light test. Demand was good, best on steer calves weighing 400-550 lbs as most were long timed weaned and two round of shots, also good demand on the 650-700 lb steers and 5 weight heifers all sold on a very active market. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
