Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, steer calves under 550 lbs traded fully steady to firm with the last auctions very active market, 550-700 lb steers sold 5.00-10.00 higher, with over 700 lbs trading with a firm to higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-600 lbs sold 4.00-7.00 higher, with 600-650 lbs trading steady to 3.00 higher and over 650 lbs selling with a higher undertone. A top quality offering on Monday's sale with a very good mix of home raised calves, with one large consignment of near 450 head of excellent quality calves weighing mostly 500-675 lbs and a good offering of back grounded yearlings all sold on a very active market. Slaughter cows traded 3.00-5.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
