Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold steady to firm on a light test, with 500-550 lbs and 600-700 lb steers selling 3.00-4.00 higher, the 550-600 lbs steers sold 5.00-7.00 higher and 4 pot loads of big yearling steers weighing 880-905 lbs with similar weights and quality as last week traded 4.00-8.00 higher. Feeder heifers weighing 450-600 lbs sold firm to 4.00 higher with 600-700 lbs selling 2.00-5.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm, spots 2.00 higher. Demand was good with supply moderate with the best demand on the good quality 5 weight steers as they sold on a very active market and heavy weight yearling steers over 800 lbs.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
