Compared to last week, 400-500 lb steer calves sold with a higher undertone on last week's light offering, 500-600 lb steers traded firm to 5.00 higher, 600-650 lbs sold steady, 650-700 lbs sold steady to 5.00 lower with more new crop calves in the 6 weight offering as the 650-800 lb steers overall quality was not as attractive as last week's attractive offering of part loads and pot loads lots of yearling steers, 700-800 lbs had few good comparisons and two pot loads of 815-822 lbs sold with a higher undertone on few comparisons. Feeder heifers 400-500 lbs sold steady to firm, with 500-600 lbs trading 3.00-5.00 higher, spots 7.00 higher, 600-650 lbs sold steady to firm, and a pot load of 730 lb heifers sold with a higher undertone. A very good quality offering of 400-600 lb steer and heifer calves sold on and active market as did the pot load lots of yearlings. Slaughter cows sold fully steady to firm on a good offering.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
