Compared to last week, feeder steers under 600 lbs sold steady to firm with last week's light offering, steers weighing 600-700 lbs sold 2.00-4.00 higher with the most advance on the 650-700 lbs, 700-750 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher, over 750 lbs were not well tested with last week's pot load lots. Feeder heifers weighing 400-700 lbs traded steady on comparable sales with last week. Slaughter cows traded 2.00-5.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate supply. CME cattle futures are back to trading in the green on Monday with moderate gains after tumbling lower late last week. Friday's COF report was neutral with estimates all coming in line with expectations, On Feed at 101.5, Placements at 98.1, and Marketings at 97.3.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
