Compared to last week, a light test of 400-500 lb steers calves sold with a lower undertone, 500-600 lb steers sold steady to 5.00 lower, spots 7.00 lower, 600-700 lbs sold steady, 700-750 lbs sold 4.00-8.00 higher and steers over 750 lbs were not well tested with last week. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold 2.00-5.00 higher, 500-700 lbs sold mostly steady sold on comparable sales and over 700 lbs were not well tested. Demand was moderate to good on moderate offering. The 700-750 lb steers got back all they lost last week and a little more on a much more active 700-750 lb market than last week. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm on mostly average dressing cows.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
