Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last Monday the feeder market was mixed with a mixed quality offering. Lighter weight feeder steers 500 lbs and under were 3.00 to 5.00 lower, while the 550-700 lbs steers were steady to 3.00 higher with a good supply and good demand for weaned packages and groups. Yearling steers were 3.00 to 6.00 higher with a good supply and strong demand for yearling cattle. Feeder heifers followed a similar path with the lighter weight heifers 600 lbs and under 2.00 to 5.00 lower or greater in spots with moderate demand, while yearling heifers appeared higher but with limited head to head comparisons. Buyers were active but selective today and were willing to pay premiums for quality feeders and yearling cattle, while at the same time increasing the discounts on plainer, off colored or fat bawling calves and increasing the price spread across the weight classes. Slaughter cows and bulls were 1.00 to 3.00 higher with a good supply and good demand. Additionally an increased interest was seen and noted in young and middle aged cows to return to the farm.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
