Compared to last Monday: Feeder cattle were all too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed on both steer and heifer calves. Not enough yearlings tested to develop any market trend. Light feeder receipts were seen this week and buyers showed light to moderate demand for all feeders on offer. Market activity today was mostly slow to moderate. Weigh up cow sold on mostly light to moderate demand for moderate to heavy offerings. Packers sent a large portion of the cow offering to feed this week as they purchased a large portion of the offering as short term feeding cows for the upcoming holidays. Even some slightly blemished cows were sent to short term feed by packers this sale. Slaughter cows and feeding cows sold mostly 3.00-5.00 lower. Weigh up conditions were mostly below average this sale with many cows pushing heavy amounts of fill. Slaughter bulls sold generally steady as feeding buyers continue to compete with slaughter bull buyers over offerings. Cow and bull quality was mixed this week from plain to very attractive. Young 2-3 year old's' suitable to feed or rebreed were too lightly tested last sale to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed on a higher quality offering than was seen last week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
