Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last sale (10-01-26): Feeder steers and heifer calves were too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however unevenly steady undertones were noticed on a mixed quality offering. Yearling cattle sold on mostly moderate demand for light offerings. Yearling cattle were mixed for quality. Some attractive quality cattle were seen this week, but many of these offerings were pushing some flesh and buyers discounted them accordingly. Calves sold on mostly moderate demand for light to moderate offerings. Calves were mostly offered in small packages this week with no load lots seen. Many cutback calves were seen off summer video sales. A wide variety of quality and breed types were seen this sale. Todays sale featured consignments of Red Angus and Hereford calves. Demand for attractive calves was good and many sold steady to firm with last weeks prices, however a large portion of the offering this week was comprised of plain to average quality calves and buyers purchased these offerings lower. Market activity was mostly moderate. A smaller buyer pool was noticed this week. This is the first feeder special of the fall. Billings livestock commission will not sale cows or bulls again this fall on Thursdays. Cows will be sold on Mondays during the fall run.

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.
