Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last sale: Feeder steer calves all sold 5.00-10.00 higher. Heifer calves under 500 lbs sold generally steady; heifer calves over 500 lbs sold mostly 3.00-5.00 higher. Yearling steers and heifers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Demand was mostly good to very good for all calves on offer. Offerings were mostly moderate. Quality today was mixed from plain to very attractive. A wider variety of quality was seen this week. Demand for weaned calves was stronger this week as more weaned offerings were seen. Small packages of calves continue to sell at a discount to large packages. Market activity was active this sale with buyers rapidly bidding on offerings. A larger buyer pool noticed this week as well. Weigh up cows sold on light to moderate demand and light offerings. Slaughter cows were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend however higher undertones were noticed. Demand was higher as buyers tried to fill loads for the week. Feeding cows sold with the best demand again this week. Feeding cows sold with higher undertones as feeding buyers also tried to fill loads for the week. Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Quality was mostly plain today.
