Compared to last sale: The last sale was two weeks ago and too few feeder cattle sold to develop any market trend. Demand for feeders was good to very good for light to moderate offerings. Quality this week was mostly plain to average, with a few packages of attractive replacement heifers seen. Very few home-raised cattle were seen this sale as many sets were cuts off video sales or sorts out of feedlots. Nevertheless, demand was good for all offerings as feeder supplies continue to tighten. Heifer quality overall was more attractive than steer quality this sale. Package sizes were moderate this week. The best demand continues to be for cattle suitable to develop into yearlings. CME Feeder cattle contracts all closed with triple digit gains today. Demand for replacement quality heifers was mostly good as several buyers bid aggressively over attractive quality offerings. Market activity was mostly active this week, with a good crowd on hand actively bidding on offerings. Weigh up cows sold on good to very good demand for light offerings. Packers and private feeders both showed good demand for all cows on offer. Slaughter cows were too lightly tested this week to develop a full market trend, however higher to sharply higher undertones were noticed. Feeding cows sold mostly 4.00-6.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Quality was mostly average this week. Weigh up conditions were mixed this sale. Slaughter bulls sold mostly 2.00-4.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed were too lightly tested last sale to develop any market trend. Quality was mostly average this week. Demand was mostly good with the best demand seen for cows which lost calves.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
