Compared to last week: Steers and heifers were too lightly tested today to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed on all offerings. Quality this sale was mostly plain to average. Most lots were offered in small packages or as singles. Demand was good to very good, despite light offerings. Higher CME live and feeder cattle contract prices continue to add support to the market. Demand for cattle suitable to run on grass was very good as order buyers and ranchers competed over offerings. Market activity was active to very active. Weigh up cows sold on mostly good demand for moderate offerings. Packers showed good demand for both feeding and slaughter cows this sale. Slaughter cows sold generally steady to firm on breaking and boning cows, lean cows sold unevenly steady. Feeding cows sold 1.00-2.00 higher on very good demand from packer buyers. Slaughter bulls sold 2.00-4.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Weigh up conditions were mixed today as both full and empty offerings were seen. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold 5.00-10.00 higher. Quality this week was average to very attractive. Most open rebreed type offerings sold for $1550-1750 per head, few fancy offerings up to $1800 per head.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
