Compared to two weeks ago: Steers were too lightly tested last sale to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to firm undertones were noticed on all offerings. Heifers under 550 lbs sold generally steady, heifers over 550 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Quality this sale was mixed from plain to very attractive. Several load lots were seen this sale and all sold on good to very good demand. Packages sold on mostly good demand as buyers were able to piece together loads of like quality cattle. Demand for grass cattle and replacement quality heifers was very good. Replacement heifer buyers and buyers looking for attractive grass heifers both showed good to very good demand and bid very aggressively on attractive offerings. Market activity was active to very active with a very large crowd on hand for todays spring N.I.L.E. special. Weigh up cows sold on mostly good demand for light to moderate offerings. Western packers showed very good demand for cows for immediate harvest, while eastern Packers purchased most offerings to feed this week. Slaughter cows sold mostly 2.00 to 4.00 higher on all classes of slaughter cows. Feeding cows were too lightly tested to develop a full market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, steady to higher undertones were noticed. Weigh up conditions were mostly below average this week as most cows were pushing heavy amounts of fill. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold with steady undertones. Quality this week was average to attractive.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
