Compared to last week: Steer calves under 700 lbs sold mostly 10.00-20.00 higher in a narrow comparison, Steers over 700 lbs sold steady to firm. Heifers under 700 lbs sold 10.00-15.00 higher, heifers over 700 lbs sold generally steady. Demand was mostly good to very good for light to moderate offerings. Quality today was mixed from plain to very attractive. Demand for thin to light fleshed cattle was very good today. Buyers continue to offer strong premiums for green cattle which consigners kept in thin flesh. Buyers purchased steers up to 760 lbs and heifers up to 675 to run on grass as long as they were in light flesh. All package sizes sold on good to very good demand. Market activity was active to very active today as demand outpaced supply and buyers bid aggressively on offerings. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand for moderate offerings. Packer buyers showed good demand for cows for immediate harvest. Packers continued to purchase a few packages of high quality cows to feed. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 lower on breaking and boning cows, lean cows sold steady. Feeding cows sold generally steady in a narrow comparison. Slaughter bulls sold steady to firm. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold mostly 5.00-10.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
