Compared to last sale(8-04-22): Feeder steers were all too lightly tested to develop any market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. The best test for for feeder heifers was 900-949 lbs which sold 8.00-10.00 higher. All other weights of heifers were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Demand today was mostly good to very good. Quality was mostly average to attractive this week. A good crowd was on hand for todays sale. Market activity was mostly active, with buyers both in the stands and on the internet actively bidding on offerings. Weigh up cows sold on mostly good demand for light to moderate offerings. Packers showed mostly good demand for all cows on offer. Most cows were purchased to send to immediate harvest this sale. Slaughter cows sold 3.00-6.00 higher than two weeks ago. Feeding cows were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Weigh up conditions were mostly below average today as most cows and bulls were very full. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 2.00 higher. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold on mostly moderate to good demand for light offerings. Quality this week was mostly average. Young cow offerings were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
