Compared to last week: Steers under 500 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed; steers 500-699 lbs sold generally steady; steers over 700 lbs sold steady to 10.00 higher. Heifers under 600 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher; heifers over 600 lbs sold 4.00-8.00 higher. Quality this week was mixed from plain to very attractive. Several load lots of feeder cattle sold today and these were met with mostly good to very good demand. Packages of feeders sold on moderate to good demand. Cattle destined for the feed lot sold on stronger demand today as order buyers purchasing cattle for packers showed very good demand for high quality reputation cattle. Cattle suitable to run on grass continue to sell on good demand. Quality this week for grass type cattle varied greatly and was not as attractive as last week. A large crowd was on hand for todays sale and buyer participation was good through out todays long sale. Market activity was mostly active as a result. Weigh up cows sold on mostly good demand for light to moderate offerings. Packer buyers showed slightly lighter demand for slaughter cows compared to last week. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 lower. Feeding cows sold on mostly good to very good demand. Packers showed very good demand for cows which had been on feed. Most of these cows were purchased to return to the feedlot to feed to premium white. Feeding cows sold steady to 3.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 3.00 lower. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold with higher undertones in a narrow comparison. Quality this week was mostly average. Packer and feeder buyers purchased much of the young offering to return to feed. Demand for young age cows was mostly moderate. A few heifers that lost their calves sold this week and these offerings sold on very good demand.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
