Compared to last week: Yearling steers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Unweaned steer calves under 400 lbs sold mostly sharply higher, with most sale 10.00-15.00 higher; 400-549 lbs sold mostly 5.00 higher; unweaned steers over 550 lbs sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher. Yearling heifers were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market, however higher undertones were noticed. Unweaned heifers under 500 lbs sold mostly steady to firm. Unweaned heifers 500-549 lbs sold mostly 2.00-4.00 higher, heifer calves over 550 sold steady to firm. Quality this sale was mostly average to attractive. Demand was mostly good for moderate to heavy offerings. Many sets of short weaned calves were seen this sale. Buyers offered no premium for most of these calves as many were full, dirty and not very eye appealing. The best demand seen this week was for cattle suitable to develop into yearlings. Market activity was mostly active this week. A large crowd was on hand with many buyers and bidders both ringside as well as on the internet. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate demand for light offerings. Packers continue to purchase cows for the upcoming holidays. All cows and bulls were very full this sale offering buyers mostly below average weigh up conditions. Slaughter cows sold sold 1.00-3.00 higher, however cows on a dressed basis were 4.00-6.00 higher than last week. Feeding cows sold mostly 1.00-2.00 higher. Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested to trend, however steady undertones were noticed. 2-3 year olds sold steady in a narrow comparison.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
