Compared to last week: Yearling feeder steers and heifers were too lightly tested either this week or last to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Unweaned steer calves under 450 lbs sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher; 450-599 lbs steers sold 7.00-10.00 higher; 600-749 lbs steers sold 3.00-8.00 higher. Unweaned heifers sold 2.00-5.00 higher on all weights. Demand was mostly moderate to good on moderate to heavy offerings. Warmer, dryer, weather was seen this week. CME positions pushed higher all week and buyers showed good demand as a result. Quality this week was average to attractive. A large crowd was on hand this week. Market activity was mostly active this week. Weigh up cows sold on mostly light to moderate demand for light offerings. Not enough cows or bulls sold last week to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to lower undertones were noticed. Quality this week was mostly average. Weigh up conditions were below average as all cows and bulls were very full.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
