Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers mainly sold steady but with spots here and there 3.00 higher to 3.00 lower. Some of the fancier cattle in attractive condition surpassed last weeks top prices and then a few weight ranges saw averages slightly lower. Heifers under 550 lbs steady to 3.00 lower but the 550-700 lb heifers 4.00-7.00 higher with spots 10.00 higher on the 6 weight heifers on a larger offering of those kind and with very good quality. Demand was good to very good for a moderate supply. A good quality cow herd dispersal followed the feeder sale. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 lower, but some high dressing cows 2.00 higher, demand was very good.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
