Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves under 650 lbs sold mostly 4.00-7.00 higher and those over 650 lbs steady. Heifers traded firm to 4.00 higher. The exception to the previous trends were the calves under 450 lbs selling mostly 10.00-13.00 higher on very good demand. Trade was active and demand was good to very good with a full house of buyers in the seats. Mostly good quality calves with just a few yearlings in the mix, however some long weaned stocker type cattle under 575 lbs in attractive condition were offered. Supply was moderate. Slaughter cows sold mostly 3.00-6.00 higher, spots up to 8.00 higher on some of the high dressing fleshy cows.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
