Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks higher market, steers weighing over 500 lbs traded steady to 5.00 lower with smaller packages offered and more variance in quality than last weeks large consignment of yearling steers and 400-500 lb steer calves sold 5.00-10.00 lower but still with very good demand. Heifers sold slightly uneven with those under 650 lbs steady to 5.00 lower and some yearlings heifers weighing 650-750 selling steady to 5.00 higher. Overall, demand was good with still a nice mix of yearlings and calves on offer. Corn has been moving higher the last several days nearing the $6.00 a bushel mark which has pressured feeder cattle lower on the board. Supply was moderate to heavy for this time of year with the fields still to wet to do much and cool weather to move cattle. Slaughter cows and bulls sold 2.00-4.00 lower.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
