Compared to the last special cow and bull sale in December, bred cows and pairs sold 300.00-500.00 higher. Demand was very good on a moderate supply. The market was very active with a large crowd ringside and a parking lot full of empty trailers looking to take the offering to a new home. The top selling pair of the evening was a 1400 lb. cow in the 2nd stage with a 400 lb. calf selling for 6100.00/pair. Another stick-out draft was 13 cows weighing 1249 lbs. in the 1st/2nd stage with 300+ lb. calves selling for 5800.00/pair. The top bred cows were a pkg. of 18 head weighing 1367 lbs. in the 2nd/3rd stage which sold for 4400.00/head. There were several bred heifers in the offering with the top draft being 22 hd. weighing 1086 lbs. in the 3rd stage selling for 4100.00/head. The top bull of the evening was a 1720 lb. three year old Charolais which sold for 7200.00/head.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
