Compared to last week, Steers sold steady to 5.00 higher, with Heifers selling steady to firm on a light test this and last week. Too few Dairy Heifers and Dairy Steers this week for a test. Cows sold steady to 3.00 higher. No test for Bulls this week. Buyer attendance for the slaughter cattle sale was moderate, with moderate to good demand on a moderate supply of cattle. Feeder Dairy Bull and Heifer calves sold mostly steady. Buyer attendance was moderate, with moderate to good demand overall on a moderate supply of calves. Increased demand and prices this week are likely due to a holiday limiting cattle supplies late last week. Todays sale supply included; 464 steers, 206 heifers, 321 cows, 74 bulls, 588 calves, and 141 misc cattle

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
