Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, Steers and Dairy Steers sold steady to 3.00 higher. Heifers sold 3.00-5.00 higher, with Dairy Heifers selling steady to 2.00 higher on a light test. Bulls sold steady on a light test, with Cows selling steady with a firm market undertone. Buyer attendance was moderate for the slaughter cattle sale, with good demand overall on a moderate supply of cattle. Finished cattle sold with strong demand throughout the sale. Due to no test last week, there is no price comparison available for Feeder Dairy Bull or Heifer calves. Calves sold with moderate demand overall with moderate buyer attendance. Todays supply included; 319 steers, 272 heifers, 378 cows, 59 bulls, 623 calves & 180 misc cattle.
