Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, Steers sold steady to 3.00 lower, with Dairy Steers selling 2.00-5.00 lower on a light test. Heifers sold 3.00-5.00 lower, with Dairy Heifers selling unevenly steady on a light test. Bulls sold steady to 3.00 lower, with Cows selling 3.00-5.00 lower. Buyer attendance was moderate, with moderate demand on a moderate supply of slaughter cattle. Feeder Dairy Bull calves sold 10.00-15.00 higher, with Feeder Dairy Heifer calves selling steady on a light test. Buyer attendance was moderate for the calf sale, with moderate demand overall on a light supply of calves. Todays sale supply included; 347 steers, 261 heifers, 93 bulls, 385 cows, 635 calves, and 261 misc. cattle.
