Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, Steers sold 2.00-3.00 higher, with Dairy Steers selling firm on a light test this and last week. Heifers sold steady to 2.00 higher compared to a light test, with Dairy Heifers selling firm on a light test this and last week. Cows sold 2.00-4.00 higher, with no comparison available for Bulls due to no test last week. Buyer attendance for the slaughter cattle sale was moderate, with moderate to good demand overall on a moderate supply of cattle. Feeder Dairy Bull calves sold steady to 5.00 lower, with Feeder Dairy Heifer calves selling steady to 3.00 higher on a light test. Buyer attendance for the calf sale was moderate, with moderate demand overall on a moderate supply of calves. Moderate to good demand was noted on Beef Cross bull calves. Todays sale supply included; 478 steers, 190 heifers, 69 bulls, 284 cows, 620 calves, and 76 misc cattle.
