Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, Steers sold steady to 2.00 lower, with Dairy Steers selling steady to 4.00 lower. Heifers sold steady on a light test this week, with Dairy Heifers selling 3.00-5.00 lower. All classes of Cows sold steady to 2.00 lower. Bulls sold mostly steady. Demand overall was moderate throughout the slaughter sale, with light to moderate buyer attendance. Weaker prices were likely due to a few buyers being absent for the fat cattle and cow sales. Feeder Dairy Bull calves sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher, with Heifer calves selling higher on a light test this and last week. Buyer attendance, demand and supply was moderate for the calf sale. Todays supply included; 366 steers, 236 heifers, 270 cows, 121 bulls, 373 calves, and 286 misc. cattle.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
