Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, Steers sold steady to 4.00 lower, with Dairy Steers selling steady to 3.00 higher on a light test. Heifers sold steady on a light test, with Dairy Heifers selling unevenly steady. Bulls sold mostly steady to 1.00 lower, and all classes of Cows sold steady to 1.50 higher. Buyer attendance for the slaughter cattle sale was moderate, with moderate demand overall on a moderate supply of cattle. Feeder Dairy Bull calves sold steady to 15.00 lower, with heifer calves selling firm on a light test. Demand for the calf sale was moderate to weak, with a moderate to heavy sale supply and buyer attendance. Todays sale supply included; 356 steers, 255 heifers, 149 bulls, 338 cows, 623 calves, and 204 misc. cattle.
