Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, Steers sold steady to 1.00 lower, with Dairy Steers selling steady to 5.00 higher on a light test. Heifers and Dairy Heifers sold steady to 2.00 higher on a light test. Bulls sold steady to 2.00 higher. Breaker Cows sold steady to 2.50 lower, with boner and lean cows selling mostly steady. Overall demand and buyer attendance was moderate to good for the slaughter cattle sale, with a moderate sale supply. Feeder Dairy Bull calves sold 2.00-3.00 lower, and Feeder Dairy Heifer calves sold firm on a light test. Buyer attendance and demand was moderate overall for the calf sale, with a moderate to heavy sale supply. Todays sale supply included; 321 steers, 217 heifers, 98 bulls, 372 cows, 688 calves, and 167 misc. cattle.
