Compared to last week, Steers sold mostly steady to 1.50 higher, with Dairy Steers selling firm on a light test this week. Heifers sold firm compared to a light test last week, with no test for Dairy Heifers. Bulls sold mostly steady to 1.50 lower, with Cows selling mostly steady to 1.00 lower. Overall, buyer attendance for the slaughter cattle sale was moderate, with moderate overall demand on a moderate sale supply. Feeder Dairy Bull calves sold weak with moderate demand, with Feeder Dairy Heifer calves selling weak on a light test. Demand was moderate for the calf sale, with moderate buyer attendance and a moderate sale supply. Todays sale supply included; 413 steers, 185 heifers, 96 bulls, 268 cows, 417 calves, and 158 misc. cattle.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
