Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week, Steers and Dairy Steers sold steady to 2.00 higher and with good demand. Heifers and Dairy Heifers sold 2.00-4.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 4.00 lower, with cows selling steady to 3.00 higher. Overall buyer attendance was heavy for todays slaughter cattle sale, with good demand overall on a moderate supply of cattle. Increased buyer attendance for todays sale was due to the Easter holiday. Feeder Dairy Bulls calves sold firm, with Heifer calves steady on a light test. Buyer attendance was moderate for the calf sale, with good demand overall on a light to moderate sale supply. Todays supply included; 352 steers, 183 heifers, 279 cows, 78 bulls, 446 calves, and 88 misc. cattle.
